He dedicado mi vida profesional al vino con mucha satisfacción. La naturaleza y la cultura del vino me inspira y me emociona. Me apasiona tanto la elaboración y el diseño de vinos, lo más diferenciados que sea posible.  

En el último tiempo, se caracterizan por proceder de viñas viejas, mono varietales, sin pasaje por madera y de crianza en botella. Hoy, mis niños mimados son “Jano Tannat en Uruguay” y “Manuscrito Graciano en España”. 

Los comunicadores de mi país me llaman “Madame Tannat”, porque desde 1991 me he ocupado de posicionar a dicha uva y su vino tanto en el mercado local como el internacional.

He trabajado en investigación y docencia universitaria en Uruguay y en el exterior. También en la promoción y desarrollo vitivinícola, como Asesora Nacional. Desde 1993 soy jurado en los concursos internacionales de vinos con aval OIV.

Tengo publicados cinco libros “Conocer para valorar” (Trilce, 1995) fue el primero y “Hablar de Vinos” el más reciente (Grijalbo, 2020). 

En el camino llegaron varios reconocimientos que agradezco muchísimo, que estimulan y llenan el alma. Entre ellos, destaco la “Orden del Mérito Agrícola en el Grado de Chevallier” otorgado por el gobierno de Francia en Paris en 1997. 

El reconocimiento en el mismo año por mi aporte a la jerarquización de la profesión de Ingeniero Agrónomo más allá del ámbito nacional de la Asociación de Ingenieros Agrónomos del Uruguay y el reconocimiento de la misma institución en 2016 a mi trayectoria profesional. 

En 2017 recibí en Uruguay el Premio Nacional Morosoli 2017 a la Investigación y Desarrollo Agropecuario, y en 2018 la OIV me condecoró Mérite de l Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin, otorgado por el Comité Ejecutivo por mis servicios a la comunidad mundial de la vid y el vino. 

Mi vida está dedicada a la familia y al vino, especialmente al Tannat de Uruguay. 

Mi entusiasmo por el vino en todas sus manifestaciones está intacto y me sigue sorprendiendo la magia de perpetuar las uvas, en el vino.  

Simplemente maravilloso.

I am Estela de Frutos, an Agronomist Engineer Oenologist. I obtained my degree in Uruguay in 1975 (UDELAR) and revalidated it in Spain in 1978 (ETSIA). I have dedicated my professional life to wine with great satisfaction.  

The nature and culture of wine inspire and excites me. 

I have worked in university teaching and research in Uruguay and abroad, in the promotion and development of wine, as National Advisor.

I am passionate about the elaboration and design of wines, as differentiated as possible. In recent times, they are characterized by coming from old vines, single varietals, without oak ageing and bottle aged. My favourite ones today are Jano Tannat in Uruguay and Manuscrito Graciano in Spain. 

The communicators in my country call me Madame Tannat, because since 1991 I have been working to position this grape and its wine both in the local and international market. 

Since 1993 I have been a jury member in international wine competitions with OIV endorsement.

I have published five books: Conocer para valorar (Know to value) (Trilce, 1995) was the first one and Hablar de Vinos (Talking about Wines) the most recent one (Grijalbo, 2020). 

Along the way, I have received several awards for which I am very grateful, which stimulate and fill my soul. Among them, I would like to highlight the following:

The “Order of Agricultural Merit in the Grade of Chevallier” awarded by the French government in Paris in 1997. The recognition in the same year for my contribution to the hierarchy of the profession of Agricultural Engineer beyond the national level by the Association of Agricultural Engineers of Uruguay and the recognition of my professional career by the same institution in 2016. In 2017 I received the 2017 Morosoli National Award for Agricultural Research and Development in Uruguay, and in 2018 the OIV awarded me the Mérite de la Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin, granted by the Executive Committee for my services to the world grapevine and wine community. 

My life is dedicated to family and wine, especially Tannat from Uruguay. 

My enthusiasm for wine in all its manifestations is intact and I continue to be amazed by the magic of perpetuating grapes, in wine. Simply marvellous.
