Wendake
Wendake, which means "Where the Island is", represents the home of the Huron-Wendat Nation, located approximately 10 km north of downtown Quebec City. This Nation has approximately 1,500 members in Wendake, including more than 3,000 Huron-Wendat living outside the community.
Covering an area of 2.26 km2, it is crossed by the Saint-Charles River whose name is Akiawenhrahk, meaning “trout river” in Wendat.
It is one of the most culturally vibrant Aboriginal communities in Quebec and is home to many thriving businesses: small craft shops, restaurants, tourist spots and many diverse businesses.
In Old Wendake, you can even find a few houses dating back around 300 years.
The Wendat language, which is part of the Iroquoian language family, gradually fell asleep from the second half of the 19th century. Even if French is advocated as the language of use for the Wendat, the members of the Nation have been engaged for several years in a process of revitalizing the Wendat language.
